JANUARY 1886 …
The South Western Railway company now has a steamer leaving Yarmouth, on Mondays only, at 8.25am, to connect with the train arriving at Southampton at 9.50am and then proceeds to Waterloo.

Yarmouth locals honour Master William RICHARDSON , son of the respected church warden, who has successfully passed the examination at the College of preception at Southampton.

Military Movements – a draft of 23 men from the Royal Irish R.A. from Golden Hill Fort, left by the 4.30 boat on route to Egypt.

Death of Mr Frank HEWITT, from a fall down stairs, Confidential Servant of the BURRARD family of The Mount, Yarmouth.

The Golden Fleece, a yacht of Major W.H. ROBERTS , passed Yarmouth from Cowes on route for Gibralta.

FEBRUARY 1886 …
H.M. Coastguard Revenue cutter “Spy” embarked some of the customs officers and coastguardsmen from Totland and Yarmouth and proceeded to Cowes for the annual drill on board H.M. Coastguard ship “Hector”.

Sale by auction of the wrecked schooner “William Thornborrow” of London.

MARCH 1886 …
James DENHAM of Norton Green, Freshwater, secured the Government Contract for extending the pier at Victoria Fort, also Cliff end Fort and Battery.

JANUARY 1894 …
The bagatelle room of the Wheatsheaf Inn was dicovered full of smoke, by a man named PITTIS, who immediately called Mr A. PLUMBLEY, the proprietor, who found a large beam at the back of the fireplace and between the bagatelle room, was smouldering.  The burning beam was cut out, avoiding a disastrous fire.

Stray Torpedo…  A torpedo boat arrived from Portsmouth and conveyed back, the torpedo, which was washed ashore during the gale and which the Coastguards had taken charge of, pending enquiries.

Mr Thomas Love PEACOCK wrote expressing regret at feeling compelled to resign the vice-chairmanship of the Town Trust on account of enforced absence from Yarmouth – The resignation was accepted and on the preposition of  Mr Fryer, seconded by Mr PLUMBLY, Mr CREETH was unanimously elected to the vacancy.

APRIL 1894 …
The tradesmen here have unanimously agreed to close their business establishments on Thurday afternoons at 1 oclock instead of 5 oclock as before.  This will be a great  benefit to the assistants.  We would appeal to our readers to shop early to avoid disappointment.

JANUARY 1894 …
A young lad named Herbert WARDER had a narrow escape from drowning, he was fishing for crabs at the Town Quay when his foot got entangled in the line and he fell overboard head foremost.  Hearing his cries the Coastguard on duty, E.H.BILLETT, without divesting himself of any clothing, jumped overboard with commendable promptitude and bravery and rescued the lad just in time.  Great credit is due to Coastguard BILLETT for his gallant act.

JULY 1896 …
Plucky rescue – Mr Edward FIDGETT, a retired master mariner aged 82, a life-long inhabitant and well known among the yachting fraternity, accidentally fell overboard at the Town Quay between the steamer Solent, which was lying alongside, and the masonry, striking the back of his head, the tide being high at the time.  Fortunately, Mr George DOE, who was near, hearing a splash and seeing the poor old gentleman struggling in the water, with commendable promptitude, jumped in and rescued him. …… 

JUNE 1899 …
The successful career of a Yarmouth man.  Among the Yarmouth lads who attended Ningwood School, will be remembered, Albert BUTLER, he left the school to go to Australia, at the invite of his uncle, Thomas ABEL, who had long settled in Kingston in the Mount Alexandria distict of Victoria. … ( a lot more info available – email me if you want more)
