Neighbours but not friends – Hannah Downer of Ventnor, complained against Frances Vince for an assault, producing a large stone, which she swore defendant threw at her.  It appeared however, that complainant had the best of the fight and retained the field of battle.  The chairman said they were both to blame and the bench could not decide which was worst:  Case dismissed; to pay half the costs, 3s.9d. each.

IW Observer 04/09/1852 – County Bench – Saturday
A legal parent – Thomas Downer, a country labourer, had a child affiliated to him by the bench, on the complaint of Ann Smith of Newchurch, with an order to pay 1s.6d. per week and costs.

IW Observer 04/09/1852 – County Bench – Saturday
William Matthews, a youngster, for stealing nectraines, the property of the Rev. M.Sharp, Ventnor: ordered to pay the costs, 7s.6d., his father engaging to give him a sound beating.

IW Observer 03/09/1853 – Newport Petty Sessions
Alfred Mitchell, was summoned by Harriet Morris of Freshwater, for the support of an illegitimate child. An order for 5s. for the midwife and 1/6d for the support of the child was made. ~

IW Observer 17/09/1853 – Ryde Police Court
Elizabeth West (a strumpet), was charged with stealing a pair of boots from the shop of Mr Jackman, High-street, Ryde. Information was given to the Police, who with great dexterity, traced the party to the “Vauxhall” at the Fountain Inn in Player-street, with the boots on, dancing. Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions on 18th Oct. ~

IW Observer 01/07/1854 – Borough Court
John Spencer, tailor of Cosham-street, Newport, was charged with an attempt to commit suicide and with threatening his wife ……committed him to Winchester Goal for three months.

IW Observer 01/07/1854 – Newport Petty Sessions
Mary Coombes, a widow, living at Newbridge with a man by the name of Blake as man and wife, was charged with ill-treating her children. The charge was proved by the evidence of three of the defendant’s neighbours. Defendant stated that her daughter (who it appeared had been treated the worse) was a very troublesome and bad child and she had certainly corrected her, but never in an improper manner. This the magistrates could not believe, but dismissed her with a severe reprimand, and gave the police orders to keep watch on her actions.

Henry Langford, a lad aged 13, was brought up in custody charged “with cutting and wounding Frederick Vanner, with intent to do him grievous bodily harm” ……

William Harvey, a woodman at Brading, was charged with an attempt to cut his wife’s throat with some intent to do some grievious bodily harm …… ~

IW Observer 12/08/1854 – Petty Sessions Saturday
James Hawkins, Henry Scott, William White, Eli Colenutt and Isaac Colenutt were each fined 5s. and 7s.6d. costs, for being drunk and disorderly in the street at Ventnor, on the Sunday evening previous.

IW Observer 12/08/1854 – Borough Sessions – Monday
Edward Browne and John Lane were charged with assaulting William Bartlett on Sunday last, on board a vessel on the river. The defendant Browne did not appear. They were each fined 10s. and 5s. costs. Lane paid his fine and Browne was ordered to be committed if he did not pay his, but we hear he has absconded.

William Parker was summoned by Elizabeth Heal for support of an illegitimate child …… ~

IW Observer 09/12/1854 – Petty Sessions – Thursday
Charlotte Hayles summoned John Sweetman Drayton under an affiliation order, to show cause why he should not support her child, of which, she alleged he was the father. The case did not come forward for hearing.

IW Observer 22/12/1855 – Winchester Assizes
Francis Hudson was indicted for making a false statement required to be known and registered of and concerning his marriage to Lucy Bowmer of Carisbrooke on the 29th May, the particulars of which appeared in this paper. The jury found the prisoner “Guilty”. The learned judge said that he thought no mischief had been done to any one, but there must be an example, to prevent others doing likewise. He should be imprisoned for six months. The woman was then sentences for bigamy to six months imprisonment.

IW Observer 22/12/1855 – Police Court Ryde
A burglary was committed at the house of Mrs Beckwith, in Spencer-road, on Tuesday last. The burglar, after regaling himself, stole a workbox containing jewellery and other articles. P.S. Stannard, on Thursday captured a ticket-of-leave man, named Alexander William Watson, and found nearly all the stolen property in his possession. He was brought up this day (Friday) and remanded till Thursday next.
