H.M.S. VICTORY – 31 May 1879 IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times
The renowned old ship “Victory” which has served as a guardship in Portsmouth harbour for so many years, was taken alongside the jetty in the Dockyard on Wednesday to have a new mainmast, the old one having become unserviceable. She has since been taken back to her old moorings.

15/09/1888 .. Amongst the thirtynine aliens who last month became subjects of the Queen by certificate of naturalisation we find the name of  Mr. Giovanni FARAONI of Argyl Villa, Daniel-street, Ryde.  The cost of a certificate is £5.5s.  (IW Observer)

NEWPORT VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE –IW County Press 18 Feb 1893
The members of the newly-formed volunteer Fire Brigade for Newport, have with
commendable spirit and zeal, entered on a systematic course of drill in order to
qualify themselves for the efficient discharge of the important duties they have
undertaken.  Elected members are:-
J.P. SHEPARD (captain), Walter MINNS, APPLE, E.ATKEY, BILLOWS, BAINS. A.B.CASE, H.CHAPPELL (hon sec), P.CROUCHER, GRIFFIN, E.HAYLES, HINDMARSH, F.MILLIGAN, T.MURSELL, MCDINE, NORRIS, RAILEY, Frank SHEPARD, W.SHEPARD, H.T.SMITH, G.SHEAF, TAPLIN, P.H.WADHAM, and WICKENS.
Mr SHAW, the Instructor, greatly distinguished himself during his 30 years in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, having saved 17 lives from fire and 1 from drowning, for which he received two medals and clasp.
