23/03/1871 .. About three o’clock on Tuesday morning a fire broke out on the premises of Mr. Charles TAYLOR, Rosemary-lane, Ryde, and resulted in the total destruction of a stable and cart-house, two carts, a quantity of harness, chaff-cutting machine, and other agricultural implements. The fire, it appears, was discovered by a neighbour named BALDWIN, and we understand that when he went out of the house he heard somebody running away. (Times)
18/02/1893 .. NEWPORT VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE – The members of the newly-formed volunteer Fire Brigade for Newport, have with commendable spirit and zeal, entered on a systematic course of drill in order to qualify themselves for the efficient discharge of the important duties they have undertaken. Elected members are:- J.P. SHEPARD (captain), Walter MINNS, APPLE, E.ATKEY, BILLOWS, BAINS. A.B.CASE, H.CHAPPELL (hon sec), P.CROUCHER, GRIFFIN, E.HAYLES, HINDMARSH, F.MILLIGAN, T.MURSELL, MCDINE, NORRIS, RAILEY, Frank SHEPARD, W.SHEPARD, H.T.SMITH, G.SHEAF, TAPLIN, P.H.WADHAM, and WICKENS. Mr SHAW, the Instructor, greatly distinguished himself during his 30 years in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, having saved 17 lives from fire and 1 from drowning, for which he received two medals and clasp. 16/02/1895 .. A fire was discovered at No 10 Preston-place, occupied by Mrs. SEARLE, on Wednesday afternoon, and Mr. S. W. BARTON and two of his men succeeded in extinguishing it. (County Press)
01/10/1898 .. An outbreak of fire which, if it had not been promptly discovered and extinguished, would have been disastrous to property of South-street, Newport, occurred about 8.30pm Saturday evening at the store premises of Mr. Arthur WOOD, in Pyle-street. About the time named several in South-street including three young men named Eli HALL, Herbert BENNETT, and John H. FOSTER, saw smoke and flames coming out over the large doors of the store in question. They saw that fire was burning inside the body of the business van of Mr. WOOD. It was soon extinguished with buckets of water. The outbreak is supposed to have originated from a lighted firework thrown by children playing in the street…… (County Press)

03/06/1905 .. On Friday afternoon a fire was discovered to have broken out in a downstair cupboard of a home in Newport-street, Ryde, occupied by Mr. Frank VANNER, The Borough Fire Brigade were summoned, and under the direction of Supt. SAPSWORTH quickly extinguished the outbreak but not before some little amount of damage was done. Mrs. VANNER and the children were in the garden at the time the fire was first noticed. 24/06/1911 .. On Friday last at about 1.45 p.m. a fire broke out on the Victoria Bathing Pier. Herbert MORRIS, a workman employed by Mr. GRACE, contractor, Southampton, was walking down the Pier when he noticed flames issuing from the back of the bathing huts. With assistance from other workmen the flames were extinguished before much damage was done. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. (Observer)
25/10/1930 .. A demonstration of the “Antifyre” pistole extinguisher was given before the Mayor (Mr. H. R. HORAN) and members and officials of the Town Council, with Capt. P. E. SHIELDS, M.O. (chief of the Fire Brigade), in Quay-street on Wednesday, by F. H. RYLANCE, of the firm’s headquarters. For the first test a length of petrol-saturated carpet was ignited, and when burning along the whole of its length it was instantly extinguished at one shot. A further and more vigorous test consisted of a wood fire inside a wooden erection tarred throughout, and fed with petrol till the flames reached a height of 15ft. This also was instantaneously extinguished, a striking tribute to the efficiency of the appliance…… (County Press)
